ESCOLARTE — A curatorial and pedagogical program to serve communities
A curatorial and educational initiative I founded and coordinate, based in Maracaibo, Venezuela. This program fosters creativity, critical thinking, and community engagement among high school students through contemporary art practices—offering workshops, exhibitions, and collaborative projects that explore identity, cultural heritage, ecosystem, local histories, urban landscapes and social transformation.
As an artist, researcher, and educator, contributing to art education in Zulia has been a matter of social and ethical responsibility.
ESCOLARTE is a program I initiated at MACZUL's art education department in 2015 to enhance art education in the high schools of my city, Maracaibo. I have been running the program since then, thanks to the collaboration of Rafael Urdaneta University, CEVAZ, Fundación Belloso, and many other collaborators and sponsors.
Maracaibo's school system has long suffered from a lack of opportunities in art education, with almost no activities that foster art-making. Even more concerning, the 2015 school curriculum changes have almost eliminated art education. This initiative is about providing students with opportunities: connecting them to the visual arts, their culture, and self-expression. It aims to open their minds to new ways of thinking while offering a cross-disciplinary experience that enriches their critical thinking and broadens their perspectives.
